Hair Pins

Hair pins date back to ancient Assyria and Egypt and were used to secure decorated hairstyles.  Hair pins were a luxury item for the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. But it wasn’t until 1901 when New Zealand inventor Ernest Godward created the spiral hair pin.

Today, hair pins come in different styles. Many serve the purpose of holding a hairstyle in place while being nearly invisible. Others are fashion hair pins that are encrusted with jewels or ornaments. In some cultures, women use hair pins as a jewelry accessory at Balls, Weddings, and other fashion events.

The most famous hair pin is the bobby pin. It is made from a single piece of wire bent disproportionately in half. The long side being straight and flat, the short side having a few kinks.
